Malicious packages in an AI agent marketplace poisoned memory files to persist instructions across sessions, exfiltrate credentials, and deploy remote access tools — 42,665 instances exposed, 341 malicious agent skills, all initiated by installing what looked like a legitimate productivity extension. In energy, manufacturing, aviation, and healthcare environments where AI automation is accelerating, a single poisoned agent skill can reach systems that no prior supply chain attack could touch.
The organizations building defensible AI agent architectures aren't waiting for marketplace vendors to solve the problem. They're rethinking permissions at the agent level, enforcing runtime controls that validate what agents actually do rather than what they claim to do, and treating every third-party extension as an untrusted package requiring the same scrutiny as a vendor firmware update. Governance isn't a checkbox in this model. It's the architecture.
